Pizza is one of my favorite foods and I bet it's yours too. So, do we know the origins of our favorite food? We all think that it comes from Italy but what about it's real history?

Pizza is an ancient food. In the 5th century Persian soldiers baked bread on their shields and added cheese and dates on them. Ancient Greeks covered flat bread with herbs, garlic and onion. However the pizza we know today didn't develop until the 16th century. That's when tomatoes came to Italy.

European explorers brought tomatoes to Italy from South America. Tomatoes flourished fast in Italy's climate and soon they grew everywhere. Pizza was developed in Naples first, where the poor people lived in Italy. With only bread to eat, tomato was a great flavor for them and it was cheap. Soon, everybody was going to the poor part of town to try some of this delicious food.

However, today in Italy some people say there are only two true kinds of pizza left and they aren't the ones we're used to eat. The first is called 'Marinara' which means 'sea' in Italian. It was the favorite one of fishermen in Naples, having tomato, oregano, garlic and olive oil on it. The second one has tomato, basil leaves and mozzarella on it and it's called 'Margheritta' which is the favorite pizza of Queen Margheritta. They don't sound familiar at all, do they?

So this is the short history of pizza, an amazing food made it's way from the bottom to the top.
